Martin married Ellen Maria Christensdatter. (Ellen Maria Christensdatter was born in 1837 in Eidsberg, Østfold, Norway, died on 13 Jul 1904 in Gutu, Askim, Østfold, Norway and was buried on 20 Jul 1904.)

In the census for 1865 they were cottagers with land on the Nygaard farm in Eidsberg. They had two sons and a daughter with them: Johan Peter, Hans Christian, and Caroline Mathea. There was also another family of cottagers on the farm.

In the census for 1900 they lived with their son Ole Martin on his farm, Gutu (bnr. 4) in Askim. Their daughters Josefine and Karoline Mathea were also there, both unmarried. Martin helped with the farmwork and Ellen Marie ran the house. ^{2 3}
