When they married Paul was 24¼ years old and Maren was 20¼. He was from the Kokstad (?) farm in Askim and she was from a Grøtvedt farm. His father was Samuel Mathisen and hers was Hans Fridriksen.

In 1857 Paul and Maren took over the Holen farm under Hauger in Askim. They had their daughter Karoline there.

Paul and Maren were cottagers on the Grøttvet farm in Askim for a while before they moved to Hovind in 1858.

In the census for 1865 they are found at Grønlandsleret in Christiania. Paul was a tomtearbeider. They had a daughter and two sons with them, but their daughter Karoline is not listed. ^{1 3 5}
