In the census for 1801 he was 7 years old and living with his parents and siblings on the Berg Østre farm in Eidsberg.

Hans married Marthe Christophersdatter, daughter of Christopher Truelsen Odalen and Johanne Larsdatter, on 18 Oct 1820 in Askim, Østfold, Norway.¹ (Marthe Christophersdatter was born circa 1793.)

  Marriage Notes:

Both Hans and Marthe were 27 years old when they married in 1820. He was from Berg in Eidsberg. At first they lived for some years on the Søndre Odalen farm in Askim, where they helped Marthe's mother run the farm. Later they bought a portion of the Nordre Odalen farm, called Nordby, from Marthe's brother Berger Christophersen. They lived there until the middle of the 19th century. ¹
