His year of birth is also recorded as 1857, and is recorded as 1855 in the baptism record for his son Johan Arnt. It was recorded as 22/8 56 when he married in 1900. His baptism record shows 12 Oct 1856.
Hans married Agnes Konstanse Olsdatter, daughter of Ole Andersen and Kristine Olsdatter, on 1 Nov 1884 in Askim, Østfold, Norway. (Agnes Konstanse Olsdatter was born on 12 Mar 1858 in Kristiania, Norway, christened on 24 May 1858, died on 26 Mar 1898 in Askim, Østfold, Norway and was buried on 2 Apr 1898.)

During the 1880's Hans and Agnes were cottagers on the Ly (Byfram) farm in Askim. In 1891 the census shows them on the Langbråtan u. Henstad farm with Agnes' mother. In 1892 Hans and Agnes were cottagers on the Busterud farm in Askim.
It appears that around the time of Agnes' death, before the turn of the century, Hans and his brother Karl moved to the Fjellbu u. Grøttvet farm. Hans remarried in 1900.
