When he married his father was recorded as Gunder Hansen Rustad. When he was baptised his parents were not married and were recorded as Caroline Amalie Olsdatter Buerplads and Gunder Hansen Rustad in Askim.

Johan married Inger Marie Torersdatter, daughter of Torer Kristiansen and Petrine Johanne Hansdatter, on 11 Mar 1900 in Askim, Østfold, Norway.1 (Inger Marie Torersdatter was born on 13 Aug 1883 in Vammeli, Askim, Østfold, Norway and died in 1958.)

  Marriage Notes:

The family lived on the Trosterud (u. Prestegården) farm in Askim. They were there in May 1913. Inger Marie and her son Johan appear to be the last people to have lived there after Anton Gundersen died in 1931. 5
