In the 1870's Karl was superintendent with Nikkelverket, and for a few years he ran a local store "i Kontoret". He farmed the søndre Rom (bnr. 2) farm in Askim after his father, from the end of the 1870's until 1901. In 1898 Karl was a member of the town council.

In the census for 1900 he was a widower. He owned and farmed the Rom (bnr. 2) farm. He had four unmarried daughters living with him. There were also 5 canal workers living there.
