In the census for 1865 he was 7 years old and living with his parents and siblings on the Mellegaard østre farm in Trøgstad. The farm was owned by his mother's father who also lived with them. ⁴

• He was a farmer, farmowner and chief cashier [Gaardbruger Selveier og Herredskaserer] in 1900 in Trøgstad, Østfold, Norway. He owned the Sukken søndre farm.

Thorvald married Maren Christensdatter, daughter of Christen Andersen Kjæsegg and Anne Frantzdatter, on 10 Jan 1884 in Trøgstad, Østfold, Norway. (Maren Christensdatter was born on 10 Jul 1861 in Trøgstad, Østfold, Norway.)

  Marriage Notes:

They were living on the Sukken søndre farm in Trøgstad in the census for 1900. At that time they had 4 sons and a daughter. They were still on Sukken in September 1901 when their son Torstein Magnus was baptised.

They were living on the Mellegaard farm in Trøgstad in October 1902 when their son August Botolf was confirmed, and in September 1906 when their daughter Ruth Helene was baptised. In October 1904, when their son Axel was confirmed, they were living on the Sukken farm. In October 1906 they were on Mellegaard. ^{2 3}
