Henrik's first wife, Eli, died shortly after giving birth to their son Elias in 1817. In 1818 Henrik and Kirsti Kristiansdatter Smedby had twin daughters Maria and Ellen.

Henrik was 38 years old and Kirsti was 40 years old when they married in 1820.
In 1821 they were recorded as Henrich Hansen og Kirsti Christiansdatter Grødtvedt. In 1830 they were recorded as Hendrich Hansen Grødtvedt Mellem og Kjersti Christiansdatter. ¹
