In the 1801 census Merchus Mattisen and Ingeborg Gabrielsdatter were farming the Bovim farm in Hobøl (Haabel), Østfold. Merchus was 25 years old and Ingeborg was 20. Both were in their first marriage. Merchus was also a soldier at that time. With them were:
Matis Merchussen, their 1 year old son;
Andreas Mathisen, Merchus' 18 year old brother, a soldier;
Barbru Mathisdatter, Merchus' 18 year old sister; and,
Mathine Mathisdatter, Merchus' 14 year old sister.
