In the 1900 census Hilmar was living with his siblings and parents on their Halstvet (Gnr 31, Bnr 1,2) farm in Eidsberg.
Hilmar bought the Rustad (gnr. 182, bnr. 3) farm in Eidsberg on 18 July 1919. He was the owner in the early 1940's.
Hilmar married Marie Katralen, daughter of Johan Henrik Antonsen and Maren Sofie Gundersdatter, on 7 May 1911. (Marie Katralen was born in 1892 in Askim, Østfold, Norway and died in 1968.)
