Gustavus IV Adolphus Holstein-Gottorp 1 2
General Notes: Gustavus IV succeeded his father, Gustavus III, under the regency of his uncle, later Charles XIII. After he joined (1805) the Third Coalition against NAPOLEON I he lost Swedish Pomerania to France and Finland to Russia (1808). His despotism, mental imbalance, and disastrous policies led to his forced abdication when the Russians threatened Stockholm (1809). Charles XIII became king and made peace with Russia. Gustavus was exiled, and his descendants barred from succession. Noted events in his life were: • Acceded: King of Sweden, 1792. • Abdicated: 1809. Gustavus married Frederica Dorothea Wilhelmina von Baden, daughter of Karl Ludwig of Padua Zähringen and Amalie of Hesse-Darmstadt, on 31 Oct 1797. The marriage ended in divorce in 1812. (Frederica Dorothea Wilhelmina von Baden was born on 12 Mar 1781 and died on 25 Sep 1826.) |
