Johan married Anna Marie Hansdatter, daughter of Hans Mattisen Sand and Oline Pettersdatter. (Anna Marie Hansdatter was born in 1864 in Askim, Østfold, Norway and died in 1934.)

In the census for 1900 they were farming on the Vaglen nordre farm in Hobøl. They had two daughters and a son with them. 2
