Maria Cristina Erzherzögin von Österreich was the daughter of Karl Ferdinand Erzherzog von Österreich and Elizabeth Franziska Maria Erzherzögin von Österreich.

She was a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. She gained the title of Erzherzögin von Österreich (styled as HI&RH Archduchess of Austria). She was baptised with the name of Marie Christine Desideria Henriette Felicitas Raineria. Through her marriage, Maria Cristina Erzherzögin von Österreich gained the title of Reina Maria de España. She held the office of Regent of Spain between 25 November 1885 and 17 May 1902.


An Austrian archduchess, she was married to Alfonso in 1879. After his death, she was regent (1886–1902) for his posthumous son, Alfonso XIII, but took very little part in political affairs. 3

Maria married Alfonso XII of Spain de Bourbon, son of Francisco de Asis and Isabella II of Spain de Bourbon, in 1879. (Alfonso XII of Spain de Bourbon was born in 1857 in Madrid, Spain and died in 1885.)
