In the census for 1801 Mattis Holmsen was 18 years old and living on the Borstad farm in Trøgstad with his mother's brother, 42 year old Poul Mattisen.

He was 67 years old when he married Maria Svendsdatter in March 1848 and was on the Trostebæk farm in Askim. His father was Holm Colbjørnsen. He appears to have been a widower when he married Maria.

In the census for 1865 Mathies was 85 years old. 5

He was 87 years old when he died.


Mathies married Marie Svendsdatter, daughter of Sven Iversen Gurud and Kristine Larsdatter Tovengen, on 9 Mar 1848 in Askim, Østfold, Norway.1 (Marie Svendsdatter was born on 7 Aug 1817 in Ilen nordre, Askim, Østfold, Norway, christened on 10 Aug 1817 in Askim, Østfold, Norway, died on 13 Jul 1894 in Trostebæk, Askim, Østfold, Norway and was buried on 21 Jul 1894 in Askim, Østfold, Norway.)


  Marriage Notes:

When they married their best men were Lensmand Hygen and Christian Gudim.

When their son Johannes was christened in June 1852 they were called Mathis Holmsen og Maria Svendsdr Trostebæk.

In the census for 1865 they owned and farmed the Trostebæk u. Gudim nedre farm in Askim. They had four children with them. Johannes was being fostered on the neighbouring farm, Gudim nedre, with Marie's sister Anna and her widowed mother Kristine Larsdatter. 1 2
