General Notes:
Son and successor of Urraca.
He recovered the places in Castile that his stepfather, Alfonso I of Aragón, had occupied and soon gained supremacy over the other Christian states in Spain. In 1135 he had himself crowned emperor in León. His many victories over the Moors had no permanent results; his most famous conquests, Córdoba (1146) and Almería (1147), were soon lost again. Alfonso left Castile to his son Sancho III (reigned 1157–58) and León to his son Ferdinand II.
Noted events in his life were:
• Acceded: Count of Castile, 1126.
• Acceded: Spanish king of Castile and León, 1126.
Alfonso married Berenguela of Barcelona Berengar, daughter of Raymond III the Great Berengar and Dolca of Provence, in 1128 in Saldana. (Berenguela of Barcelona Berengar was born in 1108 and died in Feb 1149 in Palencia.)
Alfonso next married Richeza of Poland, daughter of Wladyslaw II the Exile of Cracow and Agnes of Babenberg, in Jul 1152. (Richeza of Poland died on 16 Jun 1185.)
