Leopold recovered Lorraine in 1697, lost by his father to Louis XIV of France under the dispositions of the Treaty of Ryswick, which returned Lorraine and the Duchy of Bar to the ducal family.

Leopold married Elizabeth Charlotte d' Orleans, daughter of Philippe d' Orleans and Elizabeth Charlotte Wittelsbach, on 25 Oct 1698. (Elizabeth Charlotte d' Orleans was born on 13 Sep 1676 and died on 23 Dec 1744.)
