His father was Peder Gulbrandsen and hers was Jon Guttormsen. He was from Enebak and Spydeberg; she was from the Rud farm in Trøgstad.

In the census for 1900 Hans and Karoline owned and farmed the Rud øvre farm in Trøgstad. Living with them were their married son Anton and his wife. ^{1 3}
