Another name for John was Jean II de Hainault. General Notes: John II of Avesnes was count of Hainaut from 1278 to his death, succeeding his father, John I. He became Count of Holland in 1299 with the death of John I, Count of Holland, through his mother Adelaide of Holland, heiress and regent of this county. His descendents maintained this personal union between the counties. In 1270, John married Philippine of Luxemburg. Noted events in his life were: • He was a Comte de Hainault. John married Philippa de Luxembourg, daughter of Henry V (II?) de Luxembourg and Marguerite de Bar le Duc, in 1270. (Philippa de Luxembourg died on 6 Apr 1311.) |
