General Notes: Louis I (the Great), Ludwik Wegierski (1326 - 1382) became king of Hungary in 1342. He was the son of Charles I, king of Hungary, and was related to both the Angevin and Capetian royal families. Became a king of Poland in 1370. Noted events in his life were: • Acceded: King of Hungary, 1342. • Acceded: King of Poland, 1370. Louis married Margaret of Luxemburg, daughter of Charles IV of Bohemia and Blanche of Valois, in 1342. (Margaret of Luxemburg was born in 1335 and died in 1349.) Louis next married Elizabeth of Bosnia in 1353 in Cracow, Malopolskie, Poland.1 (Elizabeth of Bosnia was born circa 1340 and died in 1387 in Dalmatia, Yugoslavia.) The cause of her death was strangulation or drowning while imprisoned. |
