Charles Martel d' Anjou 1

  • Born: 8 Sep 1271
  • Marriage: Klementia von Hapsburg
  • Died: 12 Aug 1295, Naples, Campania, Italy aged 23

  General Notes:

He was also known as Charles I Martel, Charles Martel d'Anjou, and (in Italian) Carlo Martello' was the son of king Charles II of Naples and Maria of Hungary, the daughter of King Stephen V of Hungary. He was a titular King of Hungary from 1290 to 1295 and married Klementia von Habsburg (d.1295), daughter of Emperor Rudolf I.

Their son Charles Robert became King Charles I of Hungary. Their daughter Clemence d'Anjou (1293 - 1328) married on August 13, 1315 to Louis X of France and was the mother of John I of France.

Charles was apparently known personally to Dante: in the Divine Comedy the poet speaks warmly of and to Charles's spirit when they meet in the Paradiso.

Charles married Klementia von Hapsburg, daughter of Rudolf I of Austria Hapsburg and Gertrud von Hohenberg. (Klementia von Hapsburg was born between 1245 and 1265 and died in 1295.)
