Grant was in the service of the United States Air Force for two years during World War II. He was a gunner and had thirty missions over Germany during 1943-44.

Grant has belonged to many organizations, amoung them the Masonic Lodge, Elks and VFW.

Grant married Joan Marie Bush, daughter of Joseph Bush and Pearl, on 5 Feb 1952 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA. The marriage ended in divorce in 1978. (Joan Marie Bush was born on 23 Jul 1928 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA, died on 9 Oct 2002 ⁴ and was buried on 15 Oct 2002.)
