Queen of Romania, consort of Ferdinand.

The daughter of Alfred, duke of Edinburgh and of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, she was the granddaughter of Czar Alexander II of Russia and of Queen Victoria of England. Marie was instrumental in bringing Romania into the Allied camp in World War I, and she followed the Romanian armies as a Red Cross nurse. Her writings, in English, include novels and collections of fairy tales, as well as her autobiographies (1934 and 1935). 3

Marie married Ferdinand I of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, son of Leopold Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Antonia of Portugal Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, on 10 Jan 1893 in Sigmaringen Castle, Germany. (Ferdinand I of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen was born on 24 Aug 1865 in Sigmaringen, , Baden-Württemberg, Germany, died on 20 Jul 1927 in Sinaia, Romania and was buried in Monastery of Curtea de Arges, Sinaia, Romania.)
