Conan viser seg først i 990 som greve av Rennes. Fra 990 kaller han seg hertug av Bretagne.

Han falt i slaget ved Conqereuil (ved Nantes) 992 i kamp mot Fulco III Nerra av Anjou som var hans svoger.

Conan became ruler of Brittany after a period of civil and political unrest, through his father, Judicael Berenguer, count of Rennes and great-grandson of Duke of Brittany. He married Ermengarde of Anjou and had the following issue:
- Judith (982-1017), married Richard II, Duke of Normandy;
- Judicael, count of Porhoert (died 1037);
- Geoffrey of Brittany, his heir.
Conan died in battle and is buried in Mont St Michel Abbey.

• Acceded: Count of Rennes, 970.

• Acceded: Duke of Brittany, 987-990.


Conan married Ermengard of Anjou, daughter of Geoffroy I Grisegonelle d' Anjou and Adele of Troyes, circa 980. (Ermengard of Anjou was born in 952.)
