  General Notes:

He was son of Richard count d'Etampes and grandson of Duke John V. Francis' life was characterised by conflicts with the crown of France, ruled by king Louis XI of Valois (War of the Public Weal), and especially his son Charles VIII.

Francis II married twice, first to his cousin Margaret, heiress of Brittany, daughter of Francis I, then to Margaret of Foix, princess of Navarre. Only one daughter, Anna of Brittany, from his second marriage, survived to adulthood.

He succeeded (1458) his uncle Arthur III. In his struggle with the French crown for the independence of his duchy, Francis entered (1465) the League of the Public Weal against King Louis XI and invaded Normandy in 1467. Though forced to sign the Peace of Ancenis (1468), he continued to plot against Louis. In 1484 he joined in a rebellion against Louis’s successor, King Charles VIII, but was decisively defeated in 1488. After Francis’s death his daughter, Anne of Brittany, was married to Charles VIII.

Noted events in his life were:

• He was a Duke of Brittany.

Francis married Marguerite of Brittany, daughter of François I de Bretagne and Isabella Stewart, in 1455. (Marguerite of Brittany was born in 1443 and died in 1469.)

Francis next married Margaret of Navarre, daughter of Gaston IV de Foix and Eleanor of Navarre, on 27 Jun 1471 in Clisson. (Margaret of Navarre was born in 1458 and died on 15 May 1487.)
