Irene of Byzantium 1
Another name for Irene was Irene Angela of Byzantium. General Notes: She was described by a contemporary poet, Walther von der Vogelweide, as " the rose without a thorn, the dove without guile." 2 Irene married Roger III of Sicily, son of Tancred of Sicily and Unknown, in 1193. (Roger III of Sicily was born in 1175 and died in 1194.) Irene next married Philip of Swabia Hohenstaufen, son of Frederick I Barbarossa and Beatrix of Burgundy, on 25 May 1197. (Philip of Swabia Hohenstaufen was born in 1178 and died on 21 Jun 1208 in Bamberg, Bayern, Germany.) The cause of his death was murder. Marriage Notes: When Philip married Irene she was the widow of Roger III (1175 -1194) who was the son and heir of Tancred of Sicily. 2 |
