Joan was the fourth child (and only daughter) of John of Gaunt and his mistress Katherine Swynford.

She married, firstly, Sir Robert de Ferrers, 3rd Baron Ferrers of Wemme, son of Robert Ferrers, 2nd Baron Ferrers of Wemme and Agnes Bohun, before 30 September 1394. They had two daughters before he died.

She was born before her parents' marriage but legitimated by Parliament in February 1397. On 3 February 1397, when she was 18, Joan married Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmorland, who had also been married once before. They had at least ten children. Through her marriage, Lady Joan de Beaufort gained the title of Countess of Westmorland on 29 September 1397. She was invested as a Lady Companion, Order of the Garter in 1399. Her last will was dated 10 May 1440.


Joan married Sir Ralph de Neville, son of Sir John de Neville and Maud de Percy, on 3 Feb 1397. (Sir Ralph de Neville was born circa 1364, died on 21 Oct 1425 in Raby Castle, Durham, England and was buried in Staindrop, County Durham, England.)
