She was the daughter of Heribert IV, Count of Valois and Adela de Vexin.

Aelis married Hugh the Great of Vermandois de Crépi, son of Henry I of France Capet and Anna of Kiev Yaroslavna, circa 1080. (Hugh the Great of Vermandois de Crépi was born in 1053-1057 and died on 18 Oct 1101-1102 in Tarsus.)

By his wife, Adele of Vermandois, Hugh had seven children:
- Count Raoul I of Vermandois;
- Simon, Bishop of Noyon;
