Charles XIII of Sweden Holstein-Gottorp 1
Other names for Charles were Karl XIII and Karl II of Norway. General Notes: He was regent for his nephew, Gustavus IV, after the assassination (1792) of his brother Gustavus III. Called to the throne at the forced abdication of his nephew, Charles accepted a new constitution limiting royal power, signed treaties with Denmark and France, and ceded Finland to Russia. Noted events in his life were: • Acceded: 1809. King of Sweden. • Acceded: 1814. King of Norway. Charles married Hedwig Elisabet Charlotta Oldenburg, daughter of Frederick August von Oldenburg and Ulrike Friederike Wilhelmine von Hessen-Kassel, on 7 Jul 1774. (Hedwig Elisabet Charlotta Oldenburg was born on 22 Mar 1759 and died on 20 Jun 1818.) |
