  General Notes:

CHRISTIAN VIII, king of Denmark (1839-48) and Norway (1814), the nephew of Christian VII. Dispatched to Norway as viceroy in 1813, he accepted a liberal Norwegian constitution that is still in use with some modifications. He was chosen king of the country in May 1814, after the Norwegians had rejected the Treaty of Kiel, which ceded Norway to Sweden. The Swedish army then invaded Norway, and in November the legislature agreed on the transfer of the Crown to Charles XIII of Sweden. Christian lived in retirement until 1831 and then served as a Danish councilor of state until his accession to the throne of Denmark. The most important event of his reign was his proclamation in 1846 that Schleswig and Holstein, of which the Danish kings had long been dukes, were indissolubly united to Denmark. His reign brought prosperity to Denmark. He was succeeded by his son Frederick VII, the last king of the direct line of the Oldenburg dynasty.

Noted events in his life were:

• Acceded: 1839. King of Denmark.

Christian married Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Schwerin on 21 Jun 1806 in Ludwigslust. The marriage ended in divorce in 1810. (Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Schwerin was born on 4 Dec 1784.)

Christian next married Caroline Amelia von Schleswig-Holstein, daughter of Frederick Christian Schleswig-Holstein and Louise Augusta Oldenburg, in 1815.1 (Caroline Amelia von Schleswig-Holstein was born on 22 Jun 1796 in Copenhagen, Denmark and died on 9 Mar 1881 in Amalienborg Palace, Copenhagen, Denmark.)
