Christopher II Eriksson of Denmark 1 2
General Notes: The childless Erik Menved was succeeded by his brother, Christopher II, who was forced to sign a strict charter and was the first king to accept the hof as a permanent institution, independent of his personal supporters. He did not abide by the charter, however, and he was driven into exile after a battle with the magnates and the count of Holstein. For a time (1326-30), the young duke of South Jutland, Valdemar, ruled under the regency of the count of Holstein. After Christopher's return, the kingdom was split by a peasant uprising, church discord, and the struggle with the Holsteiners, who received almost all of the country in pawn; Skåne rebelled against its Holstein count and came under Swedish rule. Noted events in his life were: • Acceded: King of Denmark, 1320. • Deposed: From 1326 to 1329. Christopher married Euphemia of Pommerania, daughter of Bogislav IV of Pommerania and Unknown, in 1300.1 (Euphemia of Pommerania was born in 1285 and died on 26 Jul 1330.) |
