Svyatoslav Yaroslavich (1027-1076), Prince of Chernigov (1054-73), Grand Prince of Kiev (1073-76), son of Yaroslav I the Wise.

Together with his brothers - Prince Vsevolod and Grand Prince Iziaslav - he formed a kind of a princely triumvirate that oversaw the affairs of Kievan Rus' in 1054-72. In 1067, Svyatoslav and his brothers defeated Vseslav Bryachislavich, Prince of Polotsk, on the Nemiga river and took him prisoner. A year later, the brothers were defeated by Polovtsi on the Alta river. Soon, Svyatoslav managed to defeat polovtsi with a small force at the town of Snovsk, which greatly enhanced his prestige in Kievan Rus'. Svyatoslav and his brothers were the authors of Pravda Yaroslavichey - a part of the first Russian legal code called Russkaya Pravda.

In 1073, with support from his brother Vsevolod Yaroslavich, Svyatoslav dethroned and replaced his older brother Iziaslav, Grand Prince of Kiev.

In 1073 and 1076, Svyatoslav's subordinates compiled the so called Izborniki Svyatoslava at his request, which represent one of the oldest relics of the Old Russian written language. It was a collection of articles on grammar, logic, poetics, church, sermons, riddles, and parables.

Sviatoslav's first wife was named Kilikia, a lady of unknown origin, but possibly a princess from the Caucasus . Their sons were Oleg , Gleb, Roman, and David. In 1072 Sviatoslav married Oda, daughter of a certain "Count Lippold", and the sister of Burkhard, provost of Trier. Oda's grand-uncles were Pope Leo IX and Henry III, Holy Roman Emperor .

Sviatoslav's son Oleg of Chernigov had a posterity which continues in male line to the present day . His son by Oda, Yaroslav, founded the great dynasty of Riazan , and the Seljuk Sultan Kilij Arslan II claimed to descend from one of Sviatoslav's daughters.
