Birgir Magnusson of Sweden 1
General Notes: He was nominally king under a regency during 1290-1302. He was crowned in 1302 and subsequently engaged in civil war with his brothers. In 1306 he was imprisoned by his brothers, Erik and Valdemar. In 1308 the Kings of Denmark and Norway attacked Sweden on Birgir's behalf, and he was recognized in 1310. Later (1317-18), he had them imprisoned and killed but was himself driven into exile in Denmark in 1318 and his son was executed. Noted events in his life were: • He was a King of Sweden from 1290 to 1318. Birgir married Margaret of Denmark Eriksson, daughter of Erik V Glipping of Denmark and Agnes von Brandenburg, on 25 Nov 1298. (Margaret of Denmark Eriksson was born in 1282 2 and died on 2 Mar 1341.) |
