Another name for Charles was Carl X Gustaf von Zweibrücken. General Notes: Charles X was the nephew of Gustavus II. He succeeded on the abdication of his cousin, CHRISTINA. He invaded Poland (1655) but soon suffered reverses. After Denmark and Russia entered the war, Charles forced the Danes (1658) to cede territory that extended Sweden's southern boundaries to the sea. Noted events in his life were: • Acceded: 1654. King of Sweden. Charles married Hedwig Eleonora von Holstein-Gottorp, daughter of Frederick III von Holstein-Gottorp and Marie Elizabeth of Saxony Wettin, on 24 Oct 1654. (Hedwig Eleonora von Holstein-Gottorp was born on 23 Oct 1636 and died on 24 Nov 1715 in Stockholm, Sweden.) |
