Henry II the Wrangler of Bavaria 1 2

  • Born: 951
  • Marriage: Gisela of Burgundy before 972
  • Died: 28 Aug 995 aged 44

  General Notes:

Henry II the Wrangler, Duke of Bavaria, was the son of Henry I and Judith of Bavaria.

He succeed his father at the age of four, under the guardianship of his mother Judith. Heinrich married Gisela of Burgundy, a niece of the empress Adelheid, and resolved in 974 to oust Otto II from the throne of Germany. However, he was taken captive in Ingelheim - he escaped and instigated a revolt in Bavaria, but was defeated in 976 and stripped of his Duchy, and, following another revolt in 978, was placed under the custody of the Bishop of Utrecht.

After Otto's death he was released from captivity and tried once again to usurp the German throne, abducting the infant Otto III. Although he failed in his attempt to gain control of Germany, he did regain Bavaria.

His daughter Giselle of Bavaria married Saint Stephen I of Hungary, while his son became the Holy Roman Emperor Henry II.

Noted events in his life were:

• Acceded: Duke of Bavaria, 955.

• Deposed: 985.

Henry married Gisela of Burgundy, daughter of Konrad III the Peaceful of Burgundy and Adelaide of Bellay, before 972. (Gisela of Burgundy was born before 957 and died on 21 Jul 1006.)
