Flora Campbell

Flora was from Scotland.

She emigrated to Canada in the early 1900's. She lived in Montreal with her family (brought her mother and siblings over - her father was dead) before she moved to Edmonton where she met Johan. ¹

Flora married Johan Holter, son of Iver Holter and Johanne Båstad. (Johan Holter was born on 5 Jun 1884 in Skatdalen, Trøgstad, Østfold, Norway, christened on 6 Jul 1884 in Trøgstad, Østfold, Norway, died in 1937 and was buried in 1937 in Bruce Cemetary, Bruce, Alberta, Canada.)

  Marriage Notes:

When he first came to Canada from Chicago, Johan Holter had a homestead plot next door to Mayer, the person after whom Mayerthorpe is named (a small community northeast of Edmonton). They held that land and rented it out until the war. Johan was in partnership with a man named Hecla in Edmonton, where they had a construction company. After there was a small financial crash in 1912/13, Johan took the farm near Bruce, Alberta, in payment of a debt owed to him. He and Flora began farming there for a time and then moved into Bruce (70 miles east of Edmonton), where they owned and operated the Red and White store, which were probably the forerunners of National Grocers now part of Loblaws. He died of a heart atttack while waiting on a customer. Flora continued to run the store with the help of her children Ian and Linda. During the war when Ian was overseas Flora and Linda ran it. They sold the store in 1948 when Ian enrolled at the University of Alberta. Flora then moved to Edmonton. ³
