• She was a nurse [Sykepleier].

Martha married Gunnar Karsten Ulland, son of August Mathias Ulland and Magda Alette Børsum, in 1941. (Gunnar Karsten Ulland was born on 20 Aug 1902 in Oslo, Norway and died in 1992.)

  Marriage Notes:

At the time of their marriage, Gunnar and Nini lived in Bergen. He was a doctor in Haukeland sykehus, and she was laboratory assistant to prof.gyn. Løvseth. At that time married and well supported women were supposed not to occupy jobs, so she quit her position, and for the rest of Gunnar's life her skills and affection were used to serve him, their children and grandchildren. During her last ten years she could enjoy the arrival of grand grandchildren free from any tasks!

In 1943 Gunnar was employed as chief surgeon at the hospital in Sandnes in Rogaland, near Stavanger. This was a hospital covering every medical need for the population, but during the years to come, Gunnar focused on orthopaedic surgery. He did "fieldwork" in several hospitals in European cities. (He used to call himself an autodidact). A great number of the hard working rural population in the surroundings of Sandnes (Jæren) suffered from worn out backs, knees and hipsters, and at that time there was no orthopaedic surgery but in Oslo, so his skills were highly appreciated.
