General Notes: In the early part of the 10th century, Baldwin III laid the basis for the industrial and commercial greatness of the region by establishing the wool and silk industries at Ghent (Gent) and instituting annual fairs at Brugge (Bruges), Ieper and other towns. 3 Noted events in his life were: • Acceded: Count of Flanders, 958. Baldwin married Mathilde of Saxony, daughter of Hermann Billung of Saxony and Hildegard of Westerburg, in 961. (Mathilde of Saxony died on 25 May 1008.) |
