Matilda de Boulogne 1 2 3

  • Born: Cir 1104, Boulogne, Armagnac, France
  • Marriage: Stephen of England in 1119
  • Died: 3 May 1152, Hedingham Castle, Essex, England aged 48

  General Notes:

Matilda married Stephen, Count of Mortain, later King of England, and proved his strongest supporter during the period of civil war known as the Anarchy. Stephen and Matilda had three sons:
- Eustace IV of Boulogne
- Baldwin (d. before 1135)
- William of Blois, Count of Mortain and Boulogne and Earl of Surrey or Warenne.
They also had two daughters, Matilda and Marie of Boulogne.

In ca. 1125, her father died and she succeeded as Countess of Boulogne. She ruled this area jointly with her husband until 1150, when she reigned alone until 1151, when the County was given to her son Eustace, then her other son William inherited it, then her daughter Marie.

Matilda married Stephen of England, son of Stephen III Blois Chartres Champagne and Adela of England, in 1119. (Stephen of England was born circa 1097 and died on 25 Oct 1154 in Dover, Kent, England.)
