| Baldwin IV Fair Beard of Flanders
(Cir 980-1035) |
Baldwin IV Fair Beard of Flanders 1 2 3
Other names for Baldwin were Baldwin the Bearded, Baudouin le Barbu and Boudewijn de Schone Baard. General Notes: Count of Flanders (988-1035) who greatly expanded the Flemish dominions. He fought successfully both against the Capetian king of France, Robert II, and the Holy Roman emperor Henry II. Henry found himself obliged to grant to Baldwin IV in fief Valenciennes, the burgraveship of Ghent, the land of Waes, and Zeeland. The count of Flanders thus became a feudatory of the empire as well as of the French crown. The French fiefs are known in Flemish history as Crown Flanders (Kroon-Vlaanderen), the German fiefs as Imperial Flanders (Rijks-Vlaanderen). Baldwin's son--afterwards Baldwin V--rebelled in 1028 against his father at the instigation of his wife Adela, daughter of Robert II of France; but two years later peace was sworn at Oudenaarde, and the old count continued to reign until his death. Noted events in his life were: • Acceded: 988. Count of Flanders Baldwin married Otgiva of Luxembourg, daughter of Friedrich of Luxemburg and Ermentrud of Wetterau, circa 1012. (Otgiva of Luxembourg was born circa 995 and died on 21 Feb 1030.) Baldwin next married Eleanor "Eleanora" of Normandy, daughter of Richard II the Good of Normandy and Judith (de Rennes) of Brittany, after 1031. (Eleanor "Eleanora" of Normandy was born circa 1010.) |
