General Notes:
__________________________________________________
Godwine
Also spelled Godwin, earl of Wessex, the most powerful man in England during the opening years of the reign of Edward the Confessor.
Godwine became a favourite of King Canute the Great, who made him earl of Wessex about 1018. In the disputes over the succession that followed the death of Canute, Godwine was held responsible for the murder (1036) of one of the claimants to the throne, Alfred the Aetheling. Godwine maintained his position, however, and went on to dominate Edward the Confessor.
In 1045 Godwine married his daughter Edith to Edward. Nevertheless, Edward wanted to throw off Godwine's influence so that he would be free to fill his court with Norman courtiers. In 1051 he outlawed Godwine for refusing to punish the men of Dover, who had defied a Norman lord.
Edward's pro-Norman policies, however, soon aroused widespread hostility. Seizing his opportunity, Godwine emerged from exile to join his son Harold and invade England in September 1052. The defenseless Edward was forced to restore all the possessions and offices of the Godwine family. Harold became earl of Wessex upon the death of Godwine, and in 1066 he succeeded to Edward's throne as Harold II.
Noted events in his life were:
• He was an Earl of Wessex.
Gudine married Thyra Svendsdatter, daughter of Svend I Haraldsson Tjugeskjegg of Denmark and Gunhild Mieczyslavsdatter of Poland. (Thyra Svendsdatter was born in 994 and died in 1018.)
Gudine next married Gyda Torgilsdatter, daughter of Torgils Sprakalegg and Unknown, in 1019 in Halland, Sweden. (Gyda Torgilsdatter was born about 997 in Halland, Sweden and died after 1067.)
Marriage Notes:
The marriage resulted in the birth of at least twelve children: Driella of Wessex (c. 1019); Edith of Wessex, (c. 1020 - December 19, 1075), queen consort of Edward the Confessor; Sweyn Godwinson, Earl of Mercia (c. 1021 - 1052). At some point he declared himself an illegitimate son of Canute the Great but this is considered to be a false claim; Harold II of England (c. 1022 - October 14, 1066); Gungilda of Wessex, a nun (c. 1024 - 1080); Ylgiva of Wessex (c. 1025); Tostig Godwinson, Earl of Northumbria (c. 1026 - September 25, 1066); Ydgiva of Wessex (c. 1028); Gyrth Godwinson (c. 1032 - October 14, 1066); Leofwine Godwinson , Earl of Kent (c. 1035 - October 14, 1066); Wulfnoth Godwinson (c. 1036 - 1087); Ylfgar of Wessex (c. 1038). 4
