Robert I the Magnificent of Normandy 1 2
Another name for Robert was Robert II the Devil of Normandy. General Notes: Robert the Magnificent, duke of Normandy (1027-35); father of William the Conqueror. He is often mis-identified with the legendary Robert the Devil. He aided King Henry I of France against Henry's rebellious brother and mother, intervened in the affairs of Flanders, and supported Edward the Confessor, then in exile at Robert's court. He also sponsored monastic reform in Normandy. After making his illegitimate son William his heir, he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and died at Nicaea. Noted events in his life were: • Acceded: Duke of Normandy, 1028. Robert had children with Harlette of Falaise, daughter of Fulbert and Duxia. (Harlette of Falaise was born circa 1011 in Falaise, Calvados, Normandy and died circa 1050.) Robert next married Estrid Svendsdatter, daughter of Svend I Haraldsson Tjugeskjegg of Denmark and Sigrid Toftesdatter Storråde, in 1031. The marriage ended in divorce in 1032. |
