He was the son of Charles III Grimaldi , Prince of Monaco, and Antoinette de Merode-Westerloo.

He married, secondly, Mary Alice Heine, daughter of Michael Heine, in 1889. They were divorced in 1902.

Albert married Lady Mary Victoria Douglas-Hamilton, daughter of William Alexander Anthony Archibald Hamilton and Marie Amelie Elisabeth Karoline von Baden, on 21 Sep 1869. (Lady Mary Victoria Douglas-Hamilton was born on 11 Dec 1850 and died on 14 May 1922.)
