Andrew Onstad emigrated to the US in 1889 and lived in Fort Howard close to Green Bay, WI. His name is in the city of Green Bay Directory in 1892 and in 1897 it says he is living in Green Bay with his brother Martin Onstad. In 1900 he is not listed in the city directory.
Andrew is listed in the US census in 1910 living in Williston, ND and not married. Then in 1920 he is listed again in Williston and then married to Olga. It says he is a music teacher at the school.Then in 1930 he is listed as living in Sant Marie, ID. Again as music teacher at the school there.
Andrew begun school at St. Olaf College in Northfield in 1894 and 1895. He graduated in 1898.
In 1899 he was elected the leader of the school band and he held that position for 4 years.
It is listed in reports from St. Olaf College that Andrew studied violin under Ovide Musin of Belgium and New York as well as under Eugene Gruenberg of Vienna. He also studied at the New England conservatory of music in Boston and graduated there.
The climate on the east coast did not agree with him and because of his health he moved to Bakersfield California in 1926 to open a music studio. The heat was too much for him in Bakerfield so he moved to St. Marie Idaho and taught music there the next three years.
In 1930 he moved to San Luis Obispo, Ca. He opened a music studio in the old Civic Auditorium building at 1190 Monterey Street. Andrew and his wife Olga lived in the Civic Auditrium from 1930 to 1940 when the building was sold. They then moved to 1133 Pismo Street, San Luis Obispo, Ca.
After this move Andrew continue to give San Luis Obispo good music for several years until his health declined. He passed away in 1946 and is burried in San Luis Obispo.
Profesor Andrew Onstad is one of a long change of individuals responsible for a range of great musical art in San Luis Obispo.
Andreas married Olga Wetzel, daughter of August Wetzel and Maria Bretall. (Olga Wetzel was born on 23 Dec 1874 in Germany, died on 22 Nov 1947 in San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, California, USA and was buried on 28 Nov 1947 in San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo, California, USA.)
