In the census for 1865 Samuel was 17 years old and helping to farm the Kjerstad vest farm in Vestbye, Akershus. The farm was owned by Anton S. Andreassen.

In the census for 1900 Samuel was a widower. He owned and farmed the Jord farm in Vestby, Akershus. In addition to a few farmworkers, he had two unmarried daughters with him: Helene and Sigrid Marie. They were then using the name Nummestad. ²

Samuel married Marie Hansdatter Dingstad, daughter of Hans Jakob Andreassen Dingstad and Helene Hansdatter Grini. (Marie Hansdatter Dingstad was born in 1846 in Spydeberg, Østfold, Norway and died on 11 Aug 1896.)
