In the 1865 census for Høland, Askerhus, Norway, he's living on a farm named Rakkestad søndre, age 29, with wife Johanne Hals, age 30, and son Ove J. Michelet, age 1. Nils' occupation: Sagfører
In the 1920 US census, living in Minneapolis, Minnesota (Hennepin County). Nils indicates he and his wife Johanne came to the US in 1866 and were naturalized as citizens in 1890. He is a lawyer is general practice. Daughter Maren B. Michelet, age 50, is single and living with them. Her occupation is as a teacher of the Norwegian language.
Listed in the 1890 Minneapolis city directory as a lawyer working from his residence at 1807 S 4th.
Listed in Norwegian Emigrants with University Training 1830-1880 by Oystein Ore (Volume 19: Page 160):
"MICHELET, NIELS CHRISTIAN (1837-1920), law, 1861. He was born in Fredrikshald and emigrated in 1866. He worked for some time for Emigranten (Madison), and graduated from the University of Wisconsin law school in 1871. He held various govern mental positions until he moved to Minneapolis in 1882 to practice law. He was interested in art and literature and was a member of the board of a Norwegian art society in Minneapolis."

"Nils Michelet, a graduate of the University of Christiania, migrated to America in 1866, became an associate editor of Emigranten two years later, and in 1869 was employed by the Wisconsin land office.
