The intended heir of Fernando was Beatriz, wife of King Juan of Castile. The Portugese people, not wanting Castilian rule, supported John, and he was able to defeat the Castilians and establish himself as king.

Burke says he died in 1438.

John had children with Inez Perez.


John next married Philippa of Lancaster Plantagenet, daughter of John of Gaunt Plantagenet and Blanche of Lancaster Plantagenet, on 14 Feb 1387 in Oporto Cathedral, Portugal. (Philippa of Lancaster Plantagenet was born on 31 Mar 1360 in Leicester Castle, England and died on 19 Jul 1415 in Odivellas, Lisbon, Lisboa, Portugal.) The cause of her death was the plague.
