Erik married Ellen Marie Bratbost. (Ellen Marie Bratbost was born in 1863 in Kvikne, Hedmark, Norway, died on 13 Jun 1925 in Henstad, Askim, Østfold, Norway and was buried on 20 Jun 1925 in Askim, Østfold, Norway.) The cause of her death was throat cancer [strupetæring].

In the census for 1900 Erik and Elen Hektoen farmed the Brattebolstad nordre farm in Kvikne, Hedmark. They were married and had 4 children at that time. Also with them was a pensioned couple, possibly Elen's parents:
Just Iversen Bratbost, born in Kvikne in 1818, and his wife,
Anne Halvorsdtr. Bratbost, born in Kvikne in 1824. ²
