In the census for 1900 he was living with his parents and siblings on the Elnes farm in Frænen, Møre og Romsdal.

Kolbein farmed the Haga under Gjellestad farm in Askim which he bought in 1918 for 5500 kr. Later he bought the øvre Løken, bnr. 77, farm with Olav Olavsrud for 42 000 kr.


Kolbein married Selma Myhren, daughter of Unknown and Lene J. Myhren. (Selma Myhren was born in 1890 in Spydeberg, Østfold, Norway and died in 1963.)
