S.W. Karlsen of Fredriksstad Blad was told by a genealogist in Norway that:
"Johan Wilhelm Olsen married Karoline Olavesdatter. They had five children (this is apparently incorrect). The family lived in Voldgaten 2 in the old town in Fredrikstad. They bought the house 16.09.1888 for 6000 norw. kroner from Peter Isak Nygaard, who also was a house-painter. Johan Wilhelm Olsen worked for him. Olsen bought the house after Nygaard died. The original house on the site burnt down in 1858, but it was rebuilt."
Thorstein Johnsen recorded:
"Han mistet sine foreldre da han var 7 år gammel og ble borsatt av fattigvesenet til gåarden Kjenvik beliggende på østsiden av Kirkøy. Flyttet til Gamlebyen i Fredrikstad i 1864 hvor han gikk i malerlære. Startet egen malerforretning 1876."

He was named Wilhelm when he was baptised.
In the census for 1865 Wilhelm Olsen was an 18 year old servant for Hans L. Thalberg and his family in Fredrikstad. 5

Johan married Carolina Olausdotter Augustin, daughter of Olaus Johannson Augustin and Oleana Jacobsdotter, on 18 Sep 1871 in Fredrikstad, Østfold, Norway. (Carolina Olausdotter Augustin was born on 26 Sep 1846 in Østad gård, Naverstad, Bohuslen, Sweden, christened on 2 Oct 1846 in Naverstad, Bohuslen, Sweden 6 and died on 28 Dec 1926 in Fredrikstad, Østfold, Norway.)
Marriage Notes:
In the census for 1900 Wilhelm and Karoline lived at Voldgade 2 in Fredrikstad. They had three children living with them, all unmarried: Johan Wilhelm, Kristian Oskar and Sofie Wilhelmine. 7
