The census for 1900 shows Hjalmar living on one of the Aastorp farms in Askim. He was the fosterson [pleiesøn] of Mathea Olsdatter (born 1850, Trøgstad) who was unmarried and living there with her father, Ole Poulsen (born 1827, Trøgstad). Ole was a tenant there.


Hjalmar married Petra Olsen Sandem, daughter of Ole Anton Larsen and Caroline Johansdatter Nygaard, on 9 Jul 1919 in Askim church, Askim, Østfold, Norway.1 (Petra Olsen Sandem was born on 16 Nov 1894 in Askim, Østfold, Norway, died on 13 Feb 1977 and was buried in Askim new churchyard, Askim, Østfold, Norway.)
